The Truth About The South Fork Wind Farm

one-wind-turbine.png

Ominous ads began appearing recently attacking the South Fork Wind Farm with dark, misleading warnings about the costs to L.I. ratepayers, and untruths about the projects developers.*

HERE ARE THE FACTS:

The Costs:

  • In 2015, LIPA called for proposals for new sources of power to serve the South Fork and received more than a dozen competing proposals. The South Fork Wind Farm was the least cost solution to meet the rapidly growing power needs of the South Fork.

  • The South Fork RFP Portfolio (wind, storage, & demand response) will cost the average residential customer a modest increase of between $1.39 and $1.57 per month. If we do nothing and continue to rely on fossil fuels, the per kilowatt costs will be much greater.

  • When comparing costs of renewable energy to fossil fuel sources, we also need to account for the costs of air pollution, health effects, ever-rising fossil fuel prices, climate change, sea level rise, and general environmental degradation.

 The Developers:

  • Orsted is a Danish company that pioneered offshore wind farms in 2001, and now provides over 25% of the world’s offshore wind energy. In short, it is one of the most experienced and highly regarded offshore wind companies in the world.
Eversource, a 50% partner, is an old New England Energy Company which has installed much of the electric cable in the north eastern United States including underwater cables across Long Island Sound.

The Bottom Line:

East Hampton has an opportunity to continue our long tradition of leadership as custodians of a clean environment. The South Fork Wind Farm is a sound, affordable “shovel ready” project that would begin to reduce our dependence on harmful fossil fuels which contribute to catastrophic Climate Change. Only with wind power can East Hampton Town achieve its ambitious 100% renewable energy goal.
